Giving Through Your Estate 

Make a significant gift, for now and for years to come, by naming Welvista as a beneficiary in your will or living trust. By doing so, you help to ensure that our healthcare programs continue working to save and improve lives for South Carolina’s most vulnerable residents. You simply specify the assets being gifted to Welvista in your final wishes, like cash, securities, real estate, or other non-cash assets, or designate a percentage of your overall estate or the residual of your estate to be gifted. 

Benefits 

• Control—You retain ownership and control of your assets during your lifetime. They won’t pass to Welvista until your death. 

• Revocable—You can change your bequest intentions at any time during your lifetime by modifying the language in your will or trust. 

• Estate Tax Savings— Individuals who are subject to estate tax can benefit from having charitable provisions in their will or trust since assets distributed to charity at death are not subject to estate tax. 

Sample Bequest Language 

There are different kinds of bequests. For each, you must use specific language to indicate the direction of your assets and to successfully carry out your final wishes. Below are examples of how to indicate a general or undesignated gift to Welvista. 

Bequest of Specific Amount: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath ($ dollars) to Welvista, a nonprofit organization located at 121 Greystone Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210. Federal Tax ID #56-2034627.” 

Bequest of Specific Asset: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath (description of asset) to Welvista, a nonprofit organization located at 121 Greystone Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210. Federal Tax ID #56-2034627.” 

Percentage Bequest: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath (____%) of my total estate determined as of the date of my death, to Welvista, a nonprofit organization located at 121 Greystone Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210. Federal Tax ID #56-2034627.” 

Residual Bequest: “I hereby give, devise, and bequeath all or a percentage of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to Welvista, a nonprofit organization located at 121 Greystone Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210. Federal Tax ID #56-2034627.” 

Alternative Bequest 

An alternative to a bequest from your estate is a gift from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or an insurance policy. You can name Welvista as a beneficiary of all or part of your IRA or policy. The gift will be made shortly after your death, avoiding the probate process that is required of the rest of your estate.

Benefits of a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) 

When you establish a DAF with your community foundation or financial institution, you can streamline your giving and realize the following benefits: 

• ease and flexibility in making a making a charitable gift to Welvista and other nonprofits of your choosing. 

• a tax deduction in the year you make a contribution through your DAF. 

• flexibility to grant specific amounts to designated nonprofits over time. 

How to Give through a DAF 

You can make a grant recommendation to support the mission of Welvista in the following ways: 

1. Contact your foundation or financial institution to recommend a grant in a specified amount. * 

2. Call your philanthropic advisor or fund manager.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions, otherwise known as IRA charitable rollovers or IRA gifts, are a great way to support our lifesaving work by allowing your dollars to go further. QCDs may be excluded from your taxable income and qualify towards your required minimum distribution (RMD). 

How Does A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) Work? 

• You must be 70-1/2 or older at the time of gifting your IRA to charity. 

• You may distribute an amount, up to $100,000 in a calendar year, to one or more public charities, as long as it is completed by December 31 of that year. QCDs cannot be made to a donor advised fund (DAF), charitable remainder trust, or charitable gift annuity.  

• Your IRA administrator must make the distribution directly to the charity, or you may write a check to the charity from your IRA checkbook. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do not qualify.  

Why Consider An IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution? 

• Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your generosity is making. 

• Beginning in the year you turn 72, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD). 

• You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. 

• Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax. 

Next Steps to Make A QCD Gift  

1. Seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor to transfer funds to the charity you designate. 

2. To include Welvista in your plans, please use our legal name Welvista and federal tax ID #56-2034627. 

3. Call us at 803-933-9183 to let us know of your gift. Many retirement providers assume no responsibility for letting nonprofits know of your intentions. 

4. Help us credit your gift and thank you by having your IRA administrator identify you as the donor by including your name and address with your gift and note that the transfer is an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution.
