Smiles for a Lifetime
Smiles opened its third school-based center on March 8, 2004 to treat the students in Clarendon 1 and 2 School Districts. The dental center is located on the primary school campus in Manning. Due to the large number of children in these districts and the generous donation of a modular building, a fourth school-based center was opened on August 23, 2005. This center is located on the high school campus in Summerton. This expansion allows us to serve the Clarendon 1 students in Summerton and the Clarendon 2 students in Manning. This has increased the number of children that can be seen in each district.
Over 5,100 students received dental screenings in 2004. Appointments are scheduled during the school day, giving priority to those with the most urgent needs. Funding to build and operate the center was originially provided by The Duke Endowment. Other partners making the Manning and Summerton Smiles dental centers possible are The South Carolina Department of Education, Patterson Dental Supply, Healthy Learners, Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, and Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
